Why do publishers take so long to get back to you, if at all?

My record waiting period for a publisher to get back to me is 1 year.
Why? I know that they are busy but 1 year? The guidelines say that you should only send to one publisher at a time, at this rate they'll be publishing my book posthumously!
Any one else got any horror stories?
Has anyone tried self publishing?

Hi Pat,
Publishing companies are usually swamped with submissions and with the economy now and layoffs people are taking on more tasks than usual. If it is a small publishing company chances are there are only a few people looking at submissions. Even larger companies have been having trouble keeping up. My neighbor works for a large publisher and he is constantly taking work home with him so that he can keep up with everything, and that's just submissions with the big name authors!

I am the owner of Knickerbocker Circus. We are a small company that will be carrying everything from spiritual books to fiction to poetry to memoirs and photo books. Our upcoming authors include Ocha ni' Lele author of Obi: Oracle of Cuban Santeria, The Diloggun, and The Secrets of Afro-Cuban Divination and Sherene Schostak author of Surviving Saturn's Return. If you are interested we would be delighted to check out your manuscript.

My webmaster is tweeking the site right now so I will post the submission guidelines here.

Submissions:
Knickerbocker Circus accepts unsolicited submissions. Email Katelan, Emily, or Anya with a subject heading of SUBMISSION of Fiction/Nonfiction/Spirituality/Poetry/Art and Photography/Memoir (whichever is appropriate). Include your contact information on your attachments. Attachments should be no bigger than 2 megabytes. Currently we are only taking finished manuscripts however we do offer editing services. If you are in need of an editor please email Anya and she will answer your questions. If you have an idea for a photo book please send us an email with your concept and a few low resolution samples of your photography or art. Because of the volume of submissions we receive, we can't always get back to you right away. Please be patient and do not email us about your submission.
